On our second day in Cambodia we went to the Angkor Wat Complex. A 3-day pass will cost you $40US. Get there early to beat the tour buses and take pictures without tourists.
TIP
The temple complex is quite large, and every section is unique. Tour operators herd the tourists through very quickly to ‘see’ as much as possible.
We wanted to go at our own pace, and linger in certain areas, so we decided to go on our own. We hired a driver for about $25 US a day. We got to the temples early, took as long as we wanted, and left when we were tired.
Be sure to wear sturdy shoes. Take plenty of water, sunscreen, and a hat--I took a parasol. Restrooms are few, so take some tissues...
Angkor Wat Pictures
Ta Prohm. This section of the complex was by far, our favorite.
Get there early if you want to take any Angkor Wat pictures without tourists.
In case you ever wondered, this is the top of that tree.
The temples of Angkor Wat are very much alive and active.
TIP
Be aware of temple 'burn out'
There's a whole lot of temples to see, and it can become overwhelming. Mix up your visits to the complex with other activities. If you have the time, spread it out over several days. If you only have a short time, don't try to see it all. Choosing a few 'must see' areas will make your visit more enjoyable.
