“Thrombo” means "clot." Phlebitis is inflammation of a vein. Thrombophlebitis occurs when a blood clot causes inflammation in a vein, usually in the legs. The affected vein can be near the surface of the skin, or deep in a muscle. A clot in a deep vein increases the risk of serious health problems, including embolism. One of the causes of thrombophlebitis is prolonged inactivity, like sitting during a long flight. Inactivity decrease blood flow through the veins and may cause a clot to form. Altitude SicknessAt an altitude above 7,500 feet a mild decrease of oxygen in the blood occurs. If you have lung or cardiac problems, you may become short of breath. Most airlines can deliver oxygen at a nominal extra charge. You need to provide a prescription and 2-3 days notice.
