Health Precautions

Thrombophlebitis

“Thrombo” means "clot." Phlebitis is inflammation of a vein. Thrombophlebitis occurs when a blood clot causes inflammation in a vein, usually in the legs. The affected vein can be near the surface of the skin, or deep in a muscle. A clot in a deep vein increases the risk of serious health problems, including embolism.

One of the causes of thrombophlebitis is prolonged inactivity, like sitting during a long flight. Inactivity decrease blood flow through the veins and may cause a clot to form.

To help prevent a blood clot from forming:

  • Get up and walk at least once every hour
  • If you have to stay in your seat, mover your legs often. Stretch your calves by flexing your ankles vigorously at least 10 times
  • Avoid wearng tight clothing around your waist
  • Drink plenty of fluids
  • Talk to your doctor before you travel

Motion Sickness

If you’re prone to motion sickness, you can take Dramamine. It does cause drowsiness, so plan accordingly. There are also herbal options like ginger that you can get at a health food store.

Earache

If you are congested before you fly, take a decongestant 30 minutes before takeoff and landing to avoid getting an earache.

Jet Lag

To avoid jet lag:
  • Start out well rested
  • Start getting used to the new time zone before you leave. Go to bed and getting up an hour earlier or later
  • Sunlight and exercise will help reset your body. Use bright lights in the morning and take a brisk walk
  • Drink plenty of water
  • If you take a ‘red eye’ sleep through it. Use earplugs, an eye mask, and a neck pillow. Wear warm comfortable clothing
  • When you arrive, stay up if it’s daytime

Dehydration

Drink plenty of fluids. Keep alcohol consumption low.

Altitude Sickness

At an altitude above 7,500 feet a mild decrease of oxygen in the blood occurs. If you have lung or cardiac problems, you may become short of breath. Most airlines can deliver oxygen at a nominal extra charge. You need to provide a prescription and 2-3 days notice.
