Follow these suggestions for traveling with cash:- Always wear a money belt or pouch under your clothes
- If you’re staying at a reputable hotel, you can use the hotel or in-room safe to keep your money, documents, and valuables.
- If you’re staying in a hostel, keep your money and important documents such as passport and air tickets in your money belt. Keep it with you at all times, even in the shower.
- Arrive at your destination with at least $50 in local currency. Get familiar with the new currency before you arrive.
- ATM's are the safest way to access your money, AND they offer the best exchange rate.
- Withdraw larger amounts. It’s cheaper than withdrawing smaller amounts because there are per-transaction fees. But don’t exchange too much, or you’ll have to exchange it back
- Check business hours and local holidays, so you don’t get caught without cash.
- As back up in case of emergency, carry a personal check. You can write a check at an American Express office if necessary.
