Qatar Travel Security Advice

The following information was obtained as published by the Qatar Tourism Authority.



Prohibited Items:

All items offensive to the Muslim culture or sensitive to Middle East security situation are prohibited. These include:

Pork products,
Religious publications/figures,
Imitation firearms/paraphernalia,
Military uniforms.

Gambling Devices
Ivory
Plant products
Playing cards
Alcoholic Beverages
Pornography

Restricted items, subject to specific amounts:

Jewellery
Precious metals & stones
Tobacco
Prescription or over the counter medicine

Female Visitors:

  • Driving. Women visitors accompanied or alone are allowed to drive and travel freely and usually do not face any problems if the local customs are respected and followed.
  • Clothing. You must consider your choice of clothing, as bare arms, legs and midriffs are all considered disrespectful, particularly during the month of Ramadan. Women should wear loose trousers or skirts below the knee, modesty will win you more respect.
  • Unwanted Stares. Sometimes one cannot avoid unwanted stares, but if possible simply ignoring it is best. Dressing up conservatively will help avoid extra attention in souqs and other public places.



Disabled Visitors:

The Doha International Airport is equipped with chairlifts and ramps while the main Hotels here (Inter-Continental, Rydges Plaza, Sheraton, Four Seasons and Ritz Carlton) have rooms and facilities adapted well for disabled guests.

Almaha service at the International Airport also provides assistance to the at a minimal fee. Most Malls have restrooms with wheelchair accessible features, as well as reserved parking spaces closest to the entrance.



Culture:

Qatari culture revolves around Islam. Most Qataris adhere to the austere Wahhabi sect; however, Qatar is less strict. For example, alcohol is available and there is no prohibition on women driving cars.





Health:

  • Use bottled water for drinking and brushing teeth.
  • Eat only well-cooked meat and fish, preferably served hot.
  • It is recommended that visitors maintain a high salt and fluid intake due to the intense heat.
  • There are several hospitals in Qatar, the most recent and modern one is the Hamad General Hospital.
  • Unless arriving from cholera or yellow fever infected areas visitors entering Qatar are not required to carry any health certificates.
  • There is no real risk of malaria in the country. Though precautionary immunization against typhoid and hepatitis A, and vaccinations for diphtheria, hepatitis S, polio, TS and rabies are sometimes recommended.

    Passport and Visas:

    If you are just transferring to another destination, you do not need a visa. They basically escort you from and to the airport. If you are staying longer, you can obtain a visa on arrival valid for 14 days and extendable for another 14 days. Visitors are required to enter the country on Qatar Airlines.
